Official synopsis
Steven looks like a hero when he creates a magical crystal bubble around himself to protect the girl he likes from danger, but then panics when he can't figure out how to turn the bubble off.[2]
Conspiracy
Bubble Buddies (012)
The episode opens with Steven walking out of the house with his bike. The view then shifts to the Gems, debating whether the seismic disturbances are earthquakes until they see Steven. The gems are confused as to why he is riding his bike on the beach, but he leaves. He stops in front of a girl reading a book nearby. Steven then tries to impress the girl with his bike, but when he crashes, he panics and retreats into the house to find that the Gems have been watching. Amethyst realizes that Steven likes the girl and Pearl wants to set up a date, but Garnet stops them by telling Steven to talk to her. He agrees, but only if they don't watch next time, claiming it will ruin his "funky flow". Steven grabs a glowing bracelet from the freezer and runs outside. As Steven approaches the girl and practices the salute, a piece of cliff collapses and falls towards her. When Steven jumps to save her, his gem activates and seals them both in a protective bubble that saves them at the last second.
Bubble Buddies (060)
Steven introduces himself to the girl. Revealing herself as Connie, she thanks Steven and asks if she can deactivate the bubble. He then realizes that he can't deactivate the bubble. He says the Gems can help, but Steven and Connie are unable to roll up the hill. They go to the Big Donut to ask Sadie and Lars for help. Sadie tries to break the bubble with a hammer while Lars makes fun of Steven for being trapped with Connie. Sadie tells Lars to stop being crazy and they start arguing. Sadie then goes in and tries to break the bubble with a chair, but it fails like the other attempts.
Bubble Friends (162)
Connie and Steven later go to the pier and ask Onion to help them. Steven tries to ask Onion to use the harpoon gun to burst the bubble, but he can't hear him or understand Steven's drawing through the bubble. Connie writes backwards and Onion understands. Unfortunately, the harpoon bounces off the bubble and sinks a nearby trawler (ship). Steven and Connie then go to Funland because Steven wants to use the roller coaster to pop the bubble. Connie objects, but shivers send them down the tracks of the coaster. Instead of bursting the bubble, the coaster releases them into the ocean.
Bubble Friends (203)
As they try to get back to shore, a giant worm (a damaged Orange Spodumene that caused the tremors earlier) appears, scaring Connie. Steven tells her he just wants to eat some nearby glowing seaweed. Spodumene then creates a ditch into which the children fall. Steven realizes that he accidentally shoved his foot in Connie's face. He tries to apologize to her, but she ends up exploding, frustrated that Steven doesn't know what he's doing and that she might die without finding a boyfriend.
Bubble Friends (224)
Connie cries and Steven shows her a glowing bracelet and tells her they can be friends. He reveals that he saw her at the parade the year before, but he couldn't find her to return the bracelet to her, so he kept it in case he ran into her again. Connie reveals that she saw him last year as well. As the two reconcile, the bubble finally bursts and they make it to shore, only to be followed by Spodumene.
Bubble Friends (266)
Realizing that Spodumene is after Connie for her glowing bracelet, Steven takes it and uses it to lure Spodumene to a nearby pier, where he uses the pillars to trap and defeat her. The gems appear and Garnet gets rid of Spodumen's gem. As Pearl and Amethyst try to introduce themselves, Garnet stops them by telling them not to mess with Steven's "funky flow". Connie asks what a "funky flow" is, and Steven is embarrassed.
Details
Although Steven's bubble contains mostly air, it sinks in water. This may be due to the fact that the bubble itself has considerable density and mass, as evidenced in this episode and later episodes whenever it makes a sound when hit.
This is the last episode aired in 2013.
Cultural references
The book Connie is reading is The Catcher in the Rye, a controversial book that was banned from many American public schools in the 1960s and 1970s.
The episode has a similar title to the character Bubble Buddy from Spongebob Squarepants.
Garnet reminds Steven not to mess up his "funky flow", which is likely a reference to the line "Got the funky funky flow" from Prince Fleaswallow's rap in the PaRappa the Rapper video game.
Continuity
Connie's bracelet was first seen in the premiere episode "Gem Glow", inside Steven's freezer, behind the Cookie Cats.
Errors
The debris that was created when it fell from Temple's hair disappeared as Steven and Connie tried to push the bubble to move.
Connie's skirt changes from mint green to light yellow in the scene where Steven shows off his bike, and then her skirt changes back to its original color.
As Steven begins to create the bubble, Connie's book disappears in a cut to a wider shot, the book is neither inside nor outside the bubble after it is created.
Steven places the glowing bracelet on Connie's left arm. When she emerges into the water, the bracelet can be seen on her right arm.
When Garnet tells Steven that the Gems will not track his interaction with Connie, Sapphire's gem appears on Garnet's left hand instead of her right.
When Steven told Connie he saw her drop the bracelet on the boardwalk last year, he only had four fingers.
